A Taskforce for

Gender Minorities

by Minorities and Philosophy International

Our mission

Academic philosophy can be a tough place for gender minorities: few share your experience, many talk about you without listening to you, and some may exclude you and treat you differently - merely for who you are.

We are working to change that.
We are a movement for and by gender minority philosophers, and we are here to build a community, to educate, and to bridge the gap.
A taskforce....
FOR gender minorities
We want our work to benefit trans, non-binary, intersex, third gender, gender-diverse, and agender philosophers around the world.

Although cisgender or non-intersex women are a minority in philosophy, we do not consider them gender minorities in the sense of this taskforce.
For philosophers
We focus on gender minorities working in academic philosophy at all levels of seniority. This includes undergraduate and postgraduate students.

We want to cater to all MAP chapters at any philosophical research and teaching institutions or organisations worldwide.
with global scope
We want this taskforce to be a space for philosophers all over the globe. To reflect this aim, we chose 'gender minorities' over, for example, 'transgender' to reflect how conceptions of sex and gender vary in different cultural circumstances.
and intersectional ambition
We see our work as part of a bigger project to make philosophy open to all. We aim for our perspective to be intersectional, anti-racist, anti-colonial, anti-sexist, and anti-abelist.

The Taskforce for Gender Minorities belongs to Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) International.

MAP is the world's largest minority organisation in academic philosophy. It consists of more than 150 local chapters at philosophical research and teaching institutions around the world. Chapters are organised in regional networks such as MAP UK or MAP California, and, ultimately, MAP International.

It is MAP's mission to address structural injustices in academic philosophy and to remove barriers that impede participation in academic philosophy for members of marginalised groups.

What we do

The taskforce in 3 words:
community, education, resources
Picture

Community

Philosophy can be a lonely place.

Our events are intended to foster an academic and social community of gender minority philosophers.

We support MAP chapters in organising local events. We also initiate larger-scale workshops, conferences, and summer schools ourselves.

Education

There is little knowledge about gender minorities out there.

Our campaigns help inform the philosophical community about the lives of gender minorities.

We coordinate and assist campainging initiatives in MAP chapters around the world. We also provide a unified organisational voice for the interests of gender minority philosophers.

Resources

Data and information is key.

Our resources aim to support the work of local campaigners. Some cater towards gender minority philosophers themselves.

We collect data about gender minorities in philosophy. We bundle existing materials and create new resources.

You know best - contact us!

We cannot fight all battles alone.

Local MAP chapters know best what efforts work best for their institutions.
Individual gender minority philosophers know best what they need.

We are here to support and advise you in your efforts. Just reach out!

Also, we always seek new volunteers and collaborations with other organisations.
